The importance of the Code of Conduct and Ethics and respect in the workplace

Respect for your neighbor is one of the most important practices within the work environment, both in terms of staff growth within the company and in ensuring streamlined business.

Most companies have a unique Code of Conduct and Ethics created based on the company’s culture, aimed at ensuring the security, respect, and well-being of employees.

Generally, this document varies from one organization to another, precisely to correspond with the value established in each, though most codes have a lot of points in common.

Let’s take a look at some of these points and how we can do our part in guaranteeing respect and collaboration in the workplace!

Communication is key

It is important to follow a few basic principles to communicate with your coworkers within the workplace.

Firstly, be tactful when speaking with colleagues and avoid being overly incisive. Try to treat everyone around you the way you’d like to be treated.

Never humiliate a work colleague, regardless of the hierarchical difference between you. As stressful as the work environment can be, you should always be polite and foster dialog to solve situations.

Lastly, avoid any types of jokes that may make a colleague feel uncomfortable. Steer clear of inappropriate jokes and the creation of nicknames.

Avoid gossip

Gossip about work colleagues and situations can lead to problems and even jeopardize the careers of those involved, depending on the proportion that rumors take.

If someone is doing something reprehensible, speak directly with them or approach other company communication channels, like the ombudsman or HR.

Respectful feedback

Feedback is the best way to inform colleagues, leaders, and employees about their strengths and areas for improvement. Providing constructive criticism about each other's performance is a way to improve processes and promote coexistence based on trust. Therefore, provide polite and discreet feedback.

Don’t forget that positive feedback is extremely important since it bolsters confidence and a sense of collectivity and belonging for everyone.

Respect your colleagues’ workspace

Everyone has their own style of working. Some enjoy chatting with their work colleague while working, others prefer silence, and some produce best while wearing headphones...

Respect your colleagues’ workspace. Avoid imposing your style of work on others, so that the work environment is comfortable for everyone.

Take care of information under your responsibility

Respecting the Code of Ethics and Conduct also means taking care of the privacy and security of the company, customers, and people who work with you.

Treat all information to which you have access during your work as confidential unless it is classified as public or you are authorized to share it. Don't disclose information to unauthorized people or through unsecured means.

Furthermore, it may not seem like it, but communicating properly and not spreading rumors concerning other colleagues creates a healthier and therefore safer environment for everyone. A workplace with fewer distractions and disagreements contributes to a higher level of protection of all information.

Conclusion

Ethical conduct at work is essential to the development of all professionals. For companies, guiding their employees and having a well-defined code of ethics is essential to achieving good results.

Whenever in doubt about how to act in a certain situation, or if you identify unethical behavior in your workplace, consult the guidelines of your company's Code of Ethics and Conduct and, if necessary, contact HR or the ombudsman.
