Security beyond the office: ensuring cybersecurity while on vacation

Vacations are a time for relaxation and rest, aren't they? They’re a welcome break from the hectic routine of work!

However, even when we're away from the office, it's important to remember that cybersecurity risks continue to exist. The vacation period can even be a particularly vulnerable time for digital attacks.

Let's take a look at some of the cybersecurity risks that crop up during vacation periods. Below you’ll find guidelines on how you can protect yourself while enjoying a well-deserved break.

What types of risks exist while on vacation?

Phishing emails: While on vacation, you may receive phishing emails disguised as hotel reservations, airline ticket offers, or opportunities to secure incredible packages. You may even come across supposed congratulations from work colleagues or date confirmation emails from the human resources department, which are actually cybercriminals trying to obtain personal or financial information.

Public Wi-Fi networks: Many people use public Wi-Fi networks in hotels, cafés, and airports while traveling. These networks are often less secure than private networks, making them ideal targets for hackers.

Excessive sharing on social networks: Sharing photos and updates about your vacation can be fun, but also potentially dangerous. Criminals can use this information to plan targeted phishing attacks or commit other types of crimes that go beyond the digital realm.

How to protect yourself while on vacation

Take care of corporate devices: If possible, during the vacation period, leave your computer and other devices used for work at home. You should also log out of your corporate email on your personal cell phone. If you need to take your laptop with you for any reason, always carry it in your hand luggage.

Don't connect to public networks: Always prefer to use your mobile data plan to surf the Internet while traveling. If you need to connect to a public network at some point, remember to use a virtual private network (VPN) to encrypt your internet connection.

Avoid unknown USB ports: Despite seemingly convenient, public USB ports in airports, buses, and hotel rooms carry risks to the security of your information. They could have been altered by someone malicious to extract data or install malware on your device.

Beware of suspicious emails: Be wary of emails requesting personal or financial information. Always check the legitimacy of the sender and don't click on suspicious links.

Be careful what you post on social media: Avoid sharing specific details about your vacation, such as photos of tickets, specific dates, and exact locations.

Create backup copies: Back up important data stored on mobile devices and computers. That way, you can recover them if they are lost or stolen.

Activate your cell phone's remote location options: Check that your mobile device's remote location options are activated. They can help you delete all the information on the device in the event of loss or theft – which is why backup is important!

Conclusion

Cybersecurity is an ongoing responsibility. By adopting these simple practices, you can protect your personal and corporate information – and enjoy your vacation with complete peace of mind!
